Tissue grafts and bone grafts are one of the many advanced procedures dentistry can utilize to keep a smile looking its best. There are many reasons why a patient may need to undergo bone grafting, most stemming from extensive structural damage or tooth loss. These procedures help patients receive a full, healthy smile. Patients can count on beautiful results when in the hands of an experienced dental professional. Keep reading to learn more about bone and tissue grafts, and what you will experience when receiving one.
What is a Graft?
A graft is any procedure that involves moving tissue from one area of the body to another. In some cases, sourced tissue can occasionally be donated. Dental patients commonly receive grafts as well.
Gum Grafting
When a patient has advanced periodontal disease, the gum line will shrink and expose the roots of the teeth becoming more vulnerable to decay and sensitivity to temperature.
A gum graft will help restore the health and fullness of the gums. The tissue is sourced from the patient’s oral structure, often from the roof of the mouth. This new material is integrated into the gums and once the stitches dissolve, the patient’s gum line is returned to normal.
Bone Grafting
The alveolar bone, the part of the jaw bone that supports teeth, is an integral part of the oral structure. Without it, the jaw cannot support teeth or dental implants.
When teeth are gone, the alveolar bone shrinks in a process called accelerated bone resorption. Bone resorption happens naturally over time, but this process happens much faster without the stimulation of tooth roots.
The goal of a bone graft is to add mass to the alveolar bone. To do so, the dentist will either source bone from your own body or introduce artificial bone material into the area to encourage regrowth. If sourcing from the body, they often take from the iliac crest of the pelvis.
